Target Information
Steroid 5alpha-Reductase is a key enzyme in androgen physiology, catalyzing the conversion of testosterone into the more potent 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Two isoforms exist:
- Type 1: Expressed mainly in the skin
- Type 2: Expressed mainly in the prostate
5alpha-Reductase 1 is expressed in all portions of the hair follicle and in human breast carcinoma tissues, suggesting its role in local androgen production and potential involvement in cancer cell proliferation inhibition.
Additionally, the 5alpha-Reductase–3alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase complex is present in the human brain, indicating a possible role in neuroactive steroid synthesis or neurotoxic steroid metabolism.
