Target Information
Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are members of the mitochondrial anion carrier protein family. UCPs separate oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis, dissipating energy as heat (mitochondrial proton leak). They facilitate anion transfer across the mitochondrial membrane and reduce mitochondrial membrane potential in mammalian cells.
UCP-1 is specifically expressed in brown adipose tissue, which functions to produce heat.
