ZNF423는 전사인자로서 상황에 따라 활성자 또는 억제자로 작용합니다. BMP 신호전달 및 후각 신경발생에서 중요한 역할을 하며, BMP2 자극 시 SMADs와 결합하여 BMP 표적 유전자의 전사를 활성화합니다. 또한 EBF1과의 상호작용을 통해 후각 수용체 뉴런의 분화 조절에 관여합니다. 소뇌 벌름부 형성 과정에서 신경 전구세포의 증식 및 분화를 조절합니다.
