Target Information
CD28 antigen is a 44 kDa disulfide-linked homodimeric T cell-specific surface glycoprotein.
It belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily and is constitutively expressed on most peripheral blood T lymphocytes.
CD28 acts as a critical T cell costimulatory receptor, providing the essential second activation signal by binding CD80 and CD86 on antigen-presenting cells.
It prevents T cells from entering an anergic state or undergoing premature apoptosis.
In murine lymphoid organs and blood, all CD4+ and CD8+ T cells express CD28. In the thymus, expression is highest on immature CD3-, CD8+, and CD4+8+ cells.
Diseases associated with CD28 dysfunction include mycosis fungoides and Sezary’s disease.
