Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising mitoribosomes vary greatly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPL52 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein with no bacterial homolog, and multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
