WW domain-containing proteins are found in all eukaryotes and play an important role in regulating various cellular functions such as protein degradation, transcription, and RNA splicing.
This gene encodes a protein containing two WW domains and a short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase domain (SRD). It shows highest expression in hormonally regulated tissues such as testis, ovary, and prostate, suggesting a role in steroid metabolism.
The encoded protein shares more than 90% identity with the mouse protein, an essential mediator of TNF-alpha-induced apoptosis, implying a similar role in human apoptosis.
Additionally, evidence suggests this gene acts as a tumor growth suppressor. Alternative splicing generates transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
