Target Information
Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, causing more than 30,000 deaths per year in the USA. In early 2009, a novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus was identified in patients from Mexico and the United States, spreading rapidly worldwide. On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization declared it a pandemic.
Influenza A virus possesses sixteen possible Hemagglutinin (HA) and nine possible Neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins. Hemagglutinin mediates viral attachment, while Neuraminidase facilitates viral release. These proteins elicit immune responses that prevent infection or reduce viral replication.
The 2009 swine-origin H1N1 strain is genetically distinct, combining a triple assortment of human, swine, and avian influenza genes (first identified in 1998) with two additional H3N2 pig virus genes from Eurasia. Its unique antigenic properties suggest limited human immunity, though older populations may have partial protection.
