Target Information
UCMA encodes a protein specific to chondrocytes, abundantly expressed in the upper immature zone of fetal and juvenile epiphyseal cartilage. The protein undergoes proteolytic processing and is secreted into the extracellular matrix. Glutamic acid residues are gamma-carboxylated in a vitamin K-dependent manner. Undercarboxylation is associated with osteoarthritis. Alternative splicing results in multiple isoforms. UCMA is also linked to Osteoarthritis and Poland Syndrome.
