Background
Olfactory receptor family 9 subfamily Q member 1 (OR9Q1) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response triggering the perception of smell. These receptors belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) arising from single coding-exon genes. Olfactory receptors share a seven-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for odorant recognition and G protein-mediated signal transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. The nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes and proteins is organism-specific. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
