Background

DEAD box proteins are characterized by the conserved motif Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD) and are putative RNA helicases. They participate in various cellular processes involving RNA secondary structure modification, including translation initiation, splicing, and ribosome assembly. Members of this family are associated with embryogenesis, spermatogenesis, and cell growth and division. The DDX5 gene encodes an RNA-dependent ATPase and a proliferation-associated nuclear antigen that reacts with the simian virus 40 tumor antigen. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants. (RefSeq, Feb 2016)
