Background
In humans, the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) family of transmembrane transporters includes at least 48 genes and 7 subfamilies. This gene belongs to the ABCA subfamily. ABCA family genes typically encode large proteins with several thousand amino acids. Like other ABC transporters, ABCA13 is predicted to contain 12 or more transmembrane alpha-helices forming a central chamber with multiple substrate binding sites, two large extracellular domains, and two nucleotide-binding domains typical of ABCA proteins. Alternative splice variants have been described, but their biological validity has not been demonstrated.
