Target Information
Mi (Microphthalmia Transcription Factor, MITF) is a basic helix-loop-helix-leucine zipper (b-HLH-ZIP) transcription factor involved in pigmentation, mast cell, and bone development.
Mutation of Mi causes Waardenburg Syndrome type II in humans. In mice, loss of pigmented cells leads to defects in skin, eye, and inner ear, as well as osteopetrosis and abnormalities in natural killer and mast cells.
There are two known isoforms of Mi differing by 66 amino acids at the NH2 terminus.
- Shorter forms: expressed in melanocytes, appear as bands at 52 kDa and 56 kDa
- Longer forms: cluster of bands at 60–70 kDa in osteoclasts, B16 melanoma cells, mast cells, and heart
