Target Information
Functions in nuclear protein import as a nuclear transport receptor. Serves as receptor for nuclear localization signals (NLS) in cargo substrates. Mediates docking of the importin/substrate complex to the nuclear pore complex (NPC) through nucleoporin binding and translocation via a Ran-dependent mechanism. At the nucleoplasmic side, Ran binds to importin, dissociating the complex and enabling re-export to the cytoplasm. Mediates nuclear import of H2B histone, RPS7, and RPL18A, and prevents cytoplasmic aggregation of RPS7 and RPL18A. May also import H2A, H3, H4 histones, RPL4, and RPL6.
