Target Information
The paraoxonase (PON) gene family in humans includes three members: PON1, PON2, and PON3, located on chromosome 7q21.3–22.1.
PON1 is primarily synthesized in the liver and secreted into plasma, where it associates with HDL.
It hydrolyzes the active metabolites of organophosphorus insecticides (e.g., chlorpyrifos oxon, diazoxon) and nerve agents such as sarin, soman, and VX.
PON1 polymorphism may contribute to neurodegeneration and be an independent risk factor for Parkinson’s disease.
