Target Information

Calponin is a thin filament-associated protein involved in the regulation and modulation of smooth muscle contraction. It binds to actin, calmodulin, troponin C, and tropomyosin, and is expressed in smooth muscle and tissues rich in smooth muscle.
Two isoforms exist (34 kDa and 29 kDa). The 29 kDa isoform is mainly found in urogenital tract muscle. Calponin expression is also observed in myoepithelial cells of benign and malignant breast lesions. It stains smooth muscle, myoepithelial cells, myofibroblasts, keratinocytes, and nerve fibers, aiding in differentiation of breast collagenous spherulosis (positive) from adenoid cystic carcinoma. Adenoid cystic carcinoma in salivary gland tumors is calponin positive.
