Target Information
The LARGE gene, one of the largest in the human genome, encodes a member of the N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase family. It produces a glycosyltransferase involved in glycosylation of alpha-dystroglycan and may participate in the synthesis of glycoprotein and glycosphingolipid sugar chains. Mutations in this gene cause MDC1D, a congenital muscular dystrophy characterized by severe mental retardation and abnormal glycosylation of alpha-dystroglycan. Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding the same protein.
