Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, in contrast to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species in sequence and biochemical properties. The MRPL43 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein and overlaps with the SEMA4G gene at chromosome location 10q24.31, transcribed in opposite directions. Multiple transcript variants encoding at least four isoforms have been identified.
