Target Information
This gene encodes a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, part of a superfamily of ligand-gated ion channels involved in fast synaptic transmission. These pentameric receptors bind acetylcholine, triggering conformational changes that open an ion-conducting channel across the plasma membrane. The CHRNA4 protein interacts with nAChR beta-2 or beta-4 subunits to form functional receptors. Mutations cause nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy type 1, and certain polymorphisms provide protection against nicotine addiction.
