Target Information
The F131C gene encodes a member of the superoxide dismutase (SOD) protein family. SODs are antioxidant enzymes that catalyze the conversion of superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide and oxygen, protecting tissues such as the brain and lungs from oxidative stress.
Proteolytic processing of the encoded protein forms two distinct homotetramers differing in extracellular matrix (ECM) interaction ability.
- Type C subunit: High affinity for heparin, anchored to ECM
- Type A subunit: Low affinity for heparin, not associated with ECM
Mutations in this gene may be linked to increased risk of heart disease.
