Target Information
The FGG gene encodes the gamma component of fibrinogen, a blood-borne glycoprotein composed of three pairs of nonidentical polypeptide chains. Upon vascular injury, fibrinogen is cleaved by thrombin to form fibrin, the main component of blood clots. Cleavage products of fibrinogen and fibrin also regulate cell adhesion, spreading, and have vasoconstrictor and chemotactic activities. Mutations in this gene are associated with disorders such as dysfibrinogenemia, hypofibrinogenemia, and thrombophilia. Alternative splicing generates two transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
