Target Information
Glutamate receptors mediate most excitatory neurotransmission in the brain and play a crucial role in neural plasticity, development, and neurodegeneration. Ionotropic glutamate receptors include NMDA and kainate/AMPA receptors, both forming glutamate-gated, cation-specific ion channels.
Kainate/AMPA receptors are primarily responsible for fast excitatory neurotransmission, while NMDA receptors show slower Ca²⁺ kinetics and high Ca²⁺ permeability.
NMDA receptors consist of five subunits: epsilon 1–4 and one zeta subunit. The zeta subunit is expressed throughout the brainstem, while epsilon subunits show limited distribution.
