Target Information

Human prion protein (PrP), also known as PRNP, is a GPI-anchored cell surface glycoprotein associated with lipid raft components and functions as a signaling molecule. PrP plays a role in apoptosis in a cell context-dependent manner, is involved in proliferation of epithelial cells, and affects the distribution of junction-associated proteins in human enterocytes. Conversion of the normal cellular prion protein (PrPc) into an abnormal conformer (PrPSc) triggers the pathogenesis of prion neurodegenerative disorders such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). PrPc is rich in alpha-helices, while PrPSc has a higher beta-sheet content and is resistant to proteinase K.
