Mitofusin 2는 미토콘드리아 융합에 관여하는 막 단백질로, 미토콘드리아 네트워크의 유지와 기능에 기여합니다. 이 단백질은 혈관 평활근 세포 증식 조절에 관여하며, 비만의 병태생리에 역할을 할 수 있습니다.
이 유전자의 변이는 Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2A2 및 hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy VI와 같은 말초신경 질환을 유발합니다. 또한 조기 발병 뇌졸중과도 관련이 있습니다. 두 가지 전사 변이체가 동일한 단백질을 암호화하는 것으로 확인되었습니다.
