Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the somatotropin/prolactin hormone family and plays an important role in growth control. The gene is located at the growth hormone locus on chromosome 17 along with four other related genes arranged in the same transcriptional orientation, likely evolved through gene duplication. These genes share high sequence identity but are expressed selectively in different tissues. Alternative splicing generates additional isoforms, contributing to functional diversity. This family member is mainly expressed in the placenta and utilizes multiple transcription initiation sites. Mutations can result in placental lactogen deficiency and Silver-Russell syndrome.
