Target Information
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, composed of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit containing 4 RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins.
RPL17 encodes a ribosomal protein component of the 60S subunit and belongs to the L22P family. It is located in the cytoplasm.
This gene has been referred to as rpL23 due to amino acid identity with ribosomal protein L23 from Halobacterium marismortui, but its official symbol is RPL17.
Multiple processed pseudogenes are dispersed throughout the genome. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants, and read-through transcription occurs with the neighboring C18orf32 gene.
