Target Information

TGF beta-1 (TGFB1, Transforming Growth Factor Beta 1) is a member of the transforming growth factor beta superfamily of cytokines, found ubiquitously in tissues.
It is stored in the extracellular matrix as a latent complex with its pro-domain. Activation requires binding of αV integrin to an RGD sequence in the prodomain and mechanical force exertion, mediated by latent TGF-beta binding proteins.
Latent forms are complexes of TGF beta-1, an amino-terminal portion of the TGF-beta precursor (TGF-LAP), and a specific binding protein (LTBP).

TGF beta-1 regulates proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, and migration across various cell types. Many cells possess TGF beta receptors that modulate other growth factors positively or negatively.
The mature peptide can form homodimers or heterodimers with other TGF beta family members.
Upregulation of the TGF beta-1 gene is common in tumor cells, and mutations are linked to Camurati-Engelmann disease and cystic fibrosis.
