Target Information
SOX2 is an intronless gene encoding a member of the SRY-related HMG-box (SOX) family of transcription factors involved in embryonic development and cell fate determination. The SOX2 gene product is essential for stem-cell maintenance in the central nervous system and regulates gene expression in the stomach. It lies within an intron of the SOX2 overlapping transcript (SOX2OT) gene. SOX2 protein may function as a transcriptional activator through protein complex formation. Mutations in SOX2 have been linked to bilateral anophthalmia, optic nerve hypoplasia, and syndromic microphthalmia.
