이 유전자는 RNA polymerase II 전사 연장 과정에서 직접 결합하는 히스톤 아세틸전이효소 복합체인 6개의 소단위체로 구성된 elongator complex의 구성 요소를 암호화합니다. 인간 유전자는 yeast ELP4 결손 변이주의 감수성 표현형을 부분적으로 보완할 수 있습니다. 대체 스플라이싱 변이체가 보고되었으며, 그중 하나의 전장 단백질 형태만이 확인되었습니다.
