Target Information
Glutathione peroxidases (Gpxs) are ubiquitously expressed proteins that catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxides and organic hydroperoxides by glutathione. There are several isoforms differing in their primary structure and localization:
- GPx1 (cGPx): Selenium-dependent cytosolic/mitochondrial enzyme, first discovered member of the GPx family.
- GPx2 (GI-GPx): Intracellular enzyme expressed at the gastrointestinal epithelium.
- GPx3 (pGPx): Extracellular plasma GPx mainly expressed by the kidney and released into blood circulation.
- GPx4 (PH-GPx): Expressed in most tissues; reduces hydroperoxides integrated in membranes and lipids.
All mammalian GPx family members, except for the Cys-containing GPx3 and epididymis-specific secretory GPx (GPx5) isoforms, possess selenocysteine at the active site.
