Target Information

Calpains are a well-conserved family of calcium-dependent cysteine proteases found ubiquitously in cells. These proteins form heterodimers consisting of a small invariant subunit and a variable large subunit. The large subunit contains a cysteine protease domain, and both subunits have calcium-binding domains. Calpains are implicated in neurodegenerative processes, as their activation can be triggered by calcium influx and oxidative stress.
Calpain 9 is predominantly expressed in the stomach and small intestine and may play specialized roles in the digestive tract. It has been associated with gastric cancer, and multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
