GDF-5 유전자 변이는 Hunter-Thompson형 왜소증 및 Grebe 증후군과 관련이 있으며, 이 증후군은 단신, 다지증 및 사지 변형을 특징으로 합니다.
성숙하고 기능적인 GDF-5는 두 개의 120 아미노산 폴리펩타이드 사슬(모노머)이 단일 이황화 결합으로 연결된 호모다이머 형태입니다.
각 GDF-5 모노머는 27 아미노산 신호 펩타이드와 354 아미노산 프로펩타이드를 포함하는 전구체 폴리펩타이드의 C-말단 부분으로 발현되며, 세포 내에서 이합체화 후 분비 시 furin-type 프로테아제에 의해 처리됩니다.
