Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA ratio, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA found in prokaryotes. The MRPL48 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and a pseudogene corresponding to this gene is located on chromosome 6p.
