Target Information
Sulfation is a common modification of endogenous compounds such as lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates, and of exogenous compounds including xenobiotics and drugs. In mammals, the sulfate source is 3'-phosphoadenosine 5'-phosphosulfate (PAPS), synthesized from ATP and inorganic sulfate. Two distinct tissue isoforms encoded by different genes are responsible for PAPS synthesis. The PAPSS2 gene encodes one of these PAPS synthetases. Mutations in this gene are associated with the Pakistani type of spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described.
