Target Information

Toxoplasma gondii is a crescent-shaped sporozoan that lives as an intracellular parasite in various tissues of vertebrates and completes its life cycle in a single host. It is transmitted via raw or undercooked meat, contaminated soil, or direct contact.

Infection typically occurs in pregnant women or immunosuppressed patients. The parasite infects gastrointestinal tissue, causing fever and splenic enlargement. Symptoms are generally mild, but severe lymph node infection or congenital toxoplasmosis may lead to blindness or mental retardation in newborns.
T. gondii infections are widespread globally, varying by region. The organism enters intestinal epithelium and spreads to other tissues. In healthy individuals, infection is often asymptomatic, but in immunocompromised hosts, it can cause serious health problems.
