Target Information
The CYP2A6 gene encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These monooxygenases catalyze reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. The protein localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and its expression is induced by phenobarbital. CYP2A6 hydroxylates coumarin and metabolizes nicotine, aflatoxin B1, nitrosamines, and some pharmaceuticals. Certain allelic variants result in poor metabolizer phenotypes. The gene is part of a cluster of cytochrome P450 genes (CYP2A, CYP2B, CYP2F) on chromosome 19q and was formerly referred to as CYP2A3.
