Target Information
BST2 (CD317, HM1.24 antigen, DAMP-2, tetherin) is an integral membrane protein involved in B-cell development and growth. Its surface expression on fibroblast cell lines facilitates stromal cell-dependent growth of pre-B-cell lines. BST2 is highly expressed during B-cell development—from pro-B precursors to plasma cells—as well as in T-cells, monocytes, NK cells, DCs, and myeloma cells.
Research indicates BST2 functions as an inhibitor of retrovirus release from human cells, an activity antagonized by the HIV-1 accessory protein Vpu. BST2 causes retention of virions on cell surfaces or endocytosis into BST2-positive compartments. Depletion of BST2 abolishes the viral requirement for Vpu, suggesting potential therapeutic implications for HIV/AIDS. BST2 dysfunction has also been associated with stomatitis.
