Target Information
Vang-like 1 protein is a novel human homologue of Drosophila Van Gogh/Strabismus. The Vang-like 1 gene consists of at least 7 exons and encodes a protein with four transmembrane domains and the C-terminal Ser/Thr-X-Val motif.
Studies show that the expression of the protein is significantly up-regulated in gastric cancer cell lines (MKN28, MKN74) and pancreatic cancer cell lines (BxPC-3, PSN-1, Hs766T).
The protein may serve as an effector mediating the intestinal trefoil factor (ITF) healing response of the intestinal mucosa. It also serves as a diagnostic marker for hepatocellular carcinoma and a potential molecular target for development of novel therapeutic drugs.
The pathological role of the protein has been identified in neural tube defects (NTD).
Human Vang-like 1 gene maps to chromosome 1p11–p13.1.
