Target Information
Aminoglycosides are a family of bacterial antibiotics used to treat specific bacterial infections. They exhibit concentration-dependent killing action and are active against a wide range of aerobic Gram-negative bacilli. These molecules consist of an amino group and a sugar group and act by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Specifically, they bind to the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing translocation of peptidyl-tRNA and causing misreading of mRNA, which disrupts bacterial cell membrane integrity. In addition to infection control, aminoglycosides have been used as growth promoters in food-producing animals.
