Target Information
The isoprene biosynthetic pathway supplies the cell with cholesterol, ubiquinone, and various nonsterol metabolites. The farnesylpyrophosphate synthetase (FDPS) enzyme catalyzes the formation of geranyl and farnesylpyrophosphate from isopentenylpyrophosphate and dimethylallyl pyrophosphate.
Studies in rat liver using immunofluorescence and immunoelectron microscopy have shown FDPS is predominantly localized in peroxisomes. Liver tissue from patients with peroxisomal deficiency diseases such as Zellweger syndrome and neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy exhibit diminished FDPS activity and reduced isoprenoid synthesis.
