FGF18는 fibroblast growth factor (FGF) 계열의 구성원으로, 세포 성장 및 생존에 관여하는 다양한 생물학적 과정(배아 발달, 조직 재생, 종양 성장 등)에 중요한 역할을 합니다. In vitro 연구에서 PC12 세포의 신경돌기 성장을 유도하는 것으로 보고되었으며, 생쥐 및 병아리에서 유사 단백질은 간과 소장 등 여러 조직의 증식을 자극하는 다기능 성장인자로 알려져 있습니다. 생쥐 knockout 연구에서는 소뇌 중간 구조의 증식 및 분화 조절에 관여함이 시사되었습니다.
