Background
This gene encodes the alpha chain of type XVII collagen. Unlike most collagens, collagen XVII is a transmembrane protein and a structural component of hemidesmosomes, which mediate adhesion of keratinocytes to the basement membrane. Mutations in COL17A1 are associated with generalized atrophic benign and junctional epidermolysis bullosa. Two homotrimeric forms exist: the full-length transmembrane form and a soluble form (ectodomain or LAD-1) generated by proteolytic processing.
