Background
The SERPINA1 gene encodes a secreted serine protease inhibitor that targets elastase, plasmin, thrombin, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and plasminogen activator. Defects in this gene are linked to emphysema and liver disease. Multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
