배경 (Background)

The membrane-associated protein encoded by this gene belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes and are divided into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White). This protein, a member of the White subfamily, is also known as breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP) and functions as a xenobiotic transporter involved in multi-drug resistance. It likely acts as a cellular defense mechanism against mitoxantrone and anthracycline exposure. High expression in placenta suggests a potential role in placental tissue. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
