Target Information
The P2X receptor family consists of ligand-gated ion channels that increase calcium permeability in response to extracellular ATP. The seven P2X receptors (P2X1–P2X7) can form homomeric or heteromeric channels. They feature intracellular amino- and carboxy-termini and are expressed in various tissues including neurons, prostate, bladder, pancreas, colon, testis, and ovary. Their primary role is mediating synaptic transmission via extracellular ATP binding, functioning as neurotransmitter receptors. Prolonged ATP exposure may link these receptors to necrosis or apoptosis.
