Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the keratin family, which consists of intermediate filament proteins maintaining the structural integrity of epithelial cells. Keratins are subdivided into cytokeratins and hair keratins. Type I cytokeratins are acidic proteins that form heterotypic pairs with type II keratins. Cytokeratin 20 is a major protein in mature enterocytes and goblet cells, specifically expressed in gastric and intestinal mucosa. The type I cytokeratin genes are located on chromosome 17q12–q21.
