Target Information
Desmin (approximately 53 kDa) is a muscle-specific intermediate filament protein expressed predominantly in cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle cells. Its expression is developmentally and tissue-specific, being induced during terminal muscle differentiation. In skeletal and cardiac muscle, desmin localizes in the Z-disk and intercalated disk regions. Expression in smooth muscle is more heterogeneous. Coexpression of vimentin and desmin has been observed in muscle-derived tumors such as rhabdomyosarcomas and leiomyosarcomas. Altered desmin distribution has been reported during myocardial dysfunction.
