Carbenicillin is a semi-synthetic analogue of the naturally occurring benzyl-penicillin. It belongs to the carboxypenicillin subgroup of penicillins. It is bactericidal and bacteriolytic in action. It acts by binding and inhibiting enzymes involved in the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. Though more resistant than ampicillin, carbenicillin is susceptible to degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes. It is more stable at lower pH as compared to ampicillin. It is active against Gramnegative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, but has limited Gram-positive coverage.
