Cystatin C는 type 2 cystatin superfamily에 속하는 강력한 cysteine proteinase 억제 단백질입니다. 내인성(lysosomal cathepsins) 및 병원성 protease를 억제하며, 13 kDa의 분비 단백질로 생체액 내 고농도로 존재합니다. 모든 인간 핵세포에서 발현되는 것으로 알려져 있으며, atherosclerosis, amyloid angiopathy, myocardial infarction 등 다양한 심혈관 질환에서 변화가 보고되었습니다. 낮은 분자량으로 인해 신장 기능 저하의 바이오마커로도 활용됩니다.
