Target Information
Calbindin-D-28K (also known as vitamin D-dependent calcium-binding protein or cholecalcin) is a highly conserved 28 kDa calcium-binding protein with broad tissue distribution. It belongs to a family of low molecular weight calcium-binding proteins (CaBPs) including calmodulin, S-100, parvalbumin, and troponin C. These CaBPs share homologous primary structures featuring conserved EF-hand motifs for Ca²⁺ binding.
Calbindin-D-28K is predominantly found in subsets of neurons in the central and peripheral nervous systems, as well as epithelial cells involved in Ca²⁺ transport, such as distal tubular and cortical collecting tubule cells in the kidney, and enteric neuroendocrine cells.
