Target Information
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptor proteins belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, mediating odorant signal recognition and transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and its nomenclature is organism-specific.
